A pale spirit came to Marie with white eyes. She never asked whether she had died. She whispered only: “I cannot see.”

But she was not blind as a spirit. She was feeling the blindness of the child she was about to become. Marie traced her presence to a pregnant woman, and soon a baby was born with the same white eyes. The spirit had not feared blindness. She had feared entering life unloved.
