How Do Spirits Influence Human Life Without Taking Away Our Freedom?

Not every idea that enters your mind necessarily begins with you.

Spiritism teaches that spirits can influence human beings through suggestions, impressions, intuitions, and impulses that become part of our inner experience.

This influence may be constructive. A benevolent spirit may encourage courage, patience, compassion, or a clearer understanding of a difficult situation. Other spirits may reinforce fear, resentment, pride, despair, or harmful desires.

But influence is not the same as control.

A spirit may suggest a direction, intensify an emotion, or draw attention toward an idea. It cannot remove our freedom or make the moral decision in our place. Its influence becomes stronger when it finds something within us that responds to it: an existing desire, habit, fear, intention, or way of thinking.

For this reason, Spiritism does not teach us to blame invisible beings whenever we make a mistake.

The possibility of spiritual influence does not erase personal responsibility. We remain accountable for the thoughts we cultivate, the impulses we follow, and the actions we choose.

It is also important not to interpret every unwanted thought, emotional change, or difficulty as spiritual interference. Human psychology, physical health, trauma, relationships, and circumstances all affect our inner lives and should be taken seriously.

Discernment begins by observing what an influence produces. Does it encourage clarity, humility, responsibility, and care for others? Or does it create confusion, fear, isolation, superiority, or harm?

Freedom does not mean living without influence.

We are influenced by people, memories, culture, emotions, and, according to Spiritism, by spirits.

Freedom is the growing capacity to recognize those influences and decide which ones will guide our lives.
