Is the World Getting Better or Worse?

The world can seem to be getting worse because suffering is visible everywhere. Violence reaches us instantly. Injustice that once remained hidden can now be witnessed across the world. Greater awareness can make an age feel more troubled, even when part of what has changed is our ability to see and condemn what was previously ignored.

Spiritism teaches that humanity progresses, but not evenly and not in a straight line.

Knowledge may advance faster than conscience. A society can develop powerful technologies while continuing to act through prejudice, greed, or domination. Individuals and nations can resist change, return to old forms of violence, or use new abilities for destructive purposes.

This does not mean that progress is an illusion. Moral progress appears whenever people become less willing to accept cruelty as normal, recognize rights beyond their own group, protect those who are vulnerable, and hold power responsible for the harm it causes. The existence of injustice does not erase progress. Sometimes our stronger reaction against injustice is itself evidence that moral expectations have changed.

But progress is never automatic in the lives of individuals.

Humanity advances through the choices people make: what they tolerate, what they challenge, what they teach, and how they use their freedom. Every generation receives both the achievements and the unfinished work of those who came before it.

Spiritism therefore offers neither blind optimism nor despair. It does not claim that everything is improving at every moment. It teaches that the movement toward greater intelligence and moral awareness continues, even through resistance, conflict, and delay.

The world becomes better whenever human beings use what they know to become more just, compassionate, and responsible.

Progress is real. But it still asks for our participation.
