What happens to the soul after death?
According to Spiritism, death does not erase the person. It ends the soul’s union with the physical body and begins a new condition of spiritual life.
The spirit preserves its individuality, memory, and moral identity. It remains the same conscious being, but it no longer experiences existence through the physical senses. Awareness of this new condition may be immediate or may return gradually after a period of confusion.

Death does not create a different being. It removes the physical condition through which the spirit was experiencing earthly life.
While the spirit is joined to a body, Spiritism calls it the soul. When that union ends, the soul returns to being a spirit. It does not lose the individuality it developed, the choices it made, or the inner condition it formed during life.
The body is left behind, but the conscious self continues.
This does not mean that every spirit immediately understands what has happened. For some, the transition may be calm and clear. For others, awareness may return gradually. A spirit may remain confused, especially when it was deeply attached to physical life or unprepared to believe that existence could continue beyond the body.
Death does not instantly make a person wiser, kinder, or morally complete.
The spirit carries its character, affections, regrets, knowledge, and unfinished growth with it. The physical body no longer limits it in the same way, but its inner condition has not been erased.
The spirit also retains the perispirit, the subtle envelope that connected it to the physical body during incarnation. Through it, the spirit preserves its individuality and continues to perceive and act within spiritual life.
What that life feels like is not identical for everyone.
Peace, confusion, freedom, remorse, and clarity are connected to the spirit’s moral development and to what it still needs to understand.
According to Spiritism, death is therefore not a passage into nothingness, nor an automatic transformation into perfection.
Death is a return.
The soul leaves its incarnated condition, becomes a spirit again, and continues the journey it had already begun.
