What happens when life leaves the body?
According to Spiritism, death occurs when the body can no longer sustain organic life. Its matter returns to nature, and the vital principle that animated its organs is no longer active within it.
But this vital principle is not the soul. The soul is the incarnated spirit—the conscious self temporarily united with the body.

We often speak of death as though one single thing were leaving the body. But Spiritism asks us to distinguish what earthly life has temporarily joined together.
The body is a material organism.
It lives because its organs are able to work together and because a vital principle animates that physical organization. This vital force is present throughout living nature. It allows a body to grow, heal, react, and sustain organic life.
But the vital principle is not the soul.
The soul is the spirit while it is living through a body. It is the conscious self—the part of us that thinks, feels, chooses, learns, and carries moral responsibility. During earthly life, body and spirit are deeply connected, but they are not the same.
Death occurs when the body can no longer maintain the conditions necessary for organic life. Its organs stop functioning. The physical structure begins to return to nature. The force that animated that organism no longer acts within it.
What ends is the life of the body.
According to Spiritism, the spirit itself is not destroyed. Death does not erase consciousness, identity, memory, or the moral journey of the person. It changes the condition in which the spirit exists.
This does not mean that dying is simple or identical for everyone. The separation between spirit and body may be peaceful or difficult, clear or confusing, depending on many circumstances. Those questions belong to the next part of the journey.
But the first distinction is essential: the body’s life is temporary. The spirit’s existence is not.
Death is therefore not the disappearance of the person. It is the moment when the body can no longer continue the life it was given—and the spirit begins to exist beyond it.
What happens to the soul after death?
Death ends the life of the body, but according to Spiritism, it does not end the existence of the person. What happens next depends on the spirit’s transition beyond physical life—and on what it carries with it.
