Do we really have free will, or is everything predetermined?
Spiritism does not teach that every event in our lives is fixed in advance.
We are born into conditions we do not completely control, and our freedom is never absolute.
But within those limits, we still participate in what we choose, how we respond, and who we become.

Your life is not a finished script.
Spiritism teaches that free will is real, but it does not exist outside circumstance. You enter life with a body, a history, instincts, relationships, social conditions, and consequences already in motion. These can expand or restrict the choices available to you.
A spirit may choose the general nature of certain trials before birth.
But this does not mean that every encounter, accident, injustice, or decision has been written in advance. Kardec distinguishes between the conditions of a trial and the way a person responds within it.
Freedom also develops. A child does not exercise it as an adult does. Someone acting under fear, coercion, illness, ignorance, or severe social pressure may not possess the same freedom as someone with greater awareness and opportunity. Justice must therefore consider intention, understanding, and the real capacity to choose.
But influence is not destiny. A tendency can be resisted. A circumstance can be answered in more than one way. Help can be accepted. Harm can be interrupted. A different direction can begin with a decision that appears very small.
Free will does not mean that you control everything that happens to you. It means that your response is not meaningless.
The past shapes the field on which you act, but it does not write every move.
Your life contains conditions you did not choose, consequences created by others, and limits you may not be able to remove. Yet within them, your will still participates in the person you are becoming.

If all souls are equal before God, why is life so unfair?
Free will explains why our choices matter. But it does not, by itself, explain why people begin life with such unequal conditions.
